Step 2: establish the origin
Press once on the chosen event. The display should say the origin is set, not show a fabricated BPM. One timestamp has no gap. The second press creates the first interval.
Continue through a coherent passage. Avoid watching the fluctuating number if it distracts from the source. Follow the event, not the display.
Step 3: stop at an equivalent point
End after a complete phrase or planned count. Do not add a casual final press after attention leaves the pulse. If you do, preserve it or use a predeclared trimming rule; never hide it without explanation.
Remember that 21 taps contain 20 adjacent intervals. Tap count and interval count answer different questions.
Step 4: read the ledger first
Inspect last interval and the ordered gap list. A duration near twice its neighbors may indicate a missed activation or a genuine half-rate event. A duration near half may indicate an extra subdivision. Sequence position provides context that a single average lacks.
Then read raw mean and median BPM, duration centers, range, MAD or variation, and the recent window. Ask why full and recent views differ.
Step 5: repeat without editing history
Reset and run another attempt over a comparable passage. Keep pulse level, input method, device, and settings the same. Repetition reveals whether one summary is typical without merging unrelated sequences.
For example, session A might have median 120.2 BPM and 18-ms range; session B 119.8 and 20-ms range. A concise report can say “two beat-level sessions agreed near 120 BPM,” while retaining counts and spreads.
Step 6: document assumptions
Record source description, passage, pulse event, input method, tap and interval counts, reset timeout, full mean and median, recent setting and median, range, unusual positions, and any trimming rule. Round according to evidence rather than copying every decimal.
