A slower gesture with a larger assumption
The bar pulse counter is for a specific method: press once at equivalent bar boundaries, then convert the observed bar rate through a chosen number of pulses per bar. It is not ordinary beat-level tapping. Both the count and named pulse unit are assumptions printed beside every converted result.
This approach can help when individual beats are too fast or visually ambiguous but bar beginnings are clear. It can also produce a confidently wrong rate if boundaries or meter are misidentified.
Establish equivalent boundaries
Choose the same position in consecutive bars, usually the perceived downbeat. The first activation creates an origin. The second creates one complete bar interval. Six recorded boundaries contain five measured bars.
Use one input path and keep the counter focused. Space and Enter auto-repeat are ignored. The page records no global device events and never listens to audio.
Conversion formula
For a bar interval d milliseconds:
bar rate per minute = 60000 / d
converted labeled-pulse BPM = bar rate × assumed pulses per bar
If a bar lasts 2,000 milliseconds, bar rate is 30 per minute. Selecting four pulses per bar and quarter note produces 120 quarter-note BPM. Selecting three quarter-note pulses per bar produces 90 quarter-note BPM. The timestamp evidence is unchanged; the meter assumption changes the result.
This is why the interface displays “Assuming 4 quarter-note pulses per bar” rather than hiding the factor or unit.
Mean and median bar views
Each full and recent pane reports bar-duration mean and median, converted labeled-pulse rate from those centers, and range. It also shows individual bar rates. The recent setting counts bar intervals, not boundary taps.
Suppose bar durations are 2,020, 1,990, 2,010, and 1,980 milliseconds under an assumption of four quarter-note pulses per bar. Mean is 2,000, yielding 30 bars per minute and 120 quarter-note BPM. Range is 40 milliseconds. A recent window of two uses 2,010 and 1,980 rather than erasing the earlier bars.
Reporting “four measured bars, assumed 4 quarter-note pulses/bar, mean 2,000 ms, converted 120 quarter-note BPM” preserves the method.
Meter is not only a number
One number alone oversimplifies musical meter. In 6/8, many listeners feel two dotted-quarter pulses per bar, while notation contains six eighth notes. Choose 2 with dotted quarter note for the compound-pulse rate, or 6 with eighth note for the subdivision rate. The result and announcement retain that label so the two conventions cannot appear as an unexplained factor-of-three difference.
Read the 6/8 counting guide before converting. In 3/4, choosing 3 usually expresses quarter-note beats, but a fast waltz may be felt in one. The product requires you to state the convention.
Timeout for bar-level gaps
Bar intervals are longer than beat intervals, so the reset timeout ranges from 4 to 60 seconds and defaults to 15. When a new activation arrives at or beyond the threshold, it becomes a fresh origin instead of an enormous old-session bar.
Choose a threshold longer than an expected bar but short enough to separate attempts. Automatic restart is announced. Manual Reset clears timestamps immediately.
When not to use this tool
Do not use it when bar boundaries are uncertain, meter changes, bars are intentionally extended, or pickup material causes non-equivalent taps. Ordinary beat-level tapping may be more direct. A manually timed long section may be preferable when live pressing is impractical.
The tool cannot detect meter, distinguish a pickup from a downbeat, confirm bar equivalence, or decide whether the source changed tempo.
Privacy and interpretation
Timestamps, settings, and results remain in active browser memory. They are not uploaded, synchronized, or saved. There is no microphone, audio file, URL fetch, media player, account, API, database, analytics payload, or persistent history.
Converted BPM is conditional on the selected pulse count and unit. It is not an accuracy percentage or source certification.
Cross-check at beat level
When practical, run a separate ordinary beat-tap session over the same stable section. Compare its labeled pulse rate with the bar conversion only when both use the same unit. Agreement supports the arithmetic and pulse convention for that passage; disagreement prompts a check of the pulse count, unit, boundary equivalence, or source change. Do not merge the two interval ledgers because they measure different event units.
Frequently asked questions
Why tap bars instead of beats?
Bar boundaries may be easier to follow in some material, and the longer gap can smooth small press differences. The meter assumption becomes more consequential.
Does choosing 6 mean the music is in 6/8?
No. Six with eighth note merely labels and multiplies the bar rate as an eighth-note subdivision. Meter must be established separately.
Why did BPM change when I changed the dropdown?
The same bar evidence was multiplied by a different assumed pulse count; a changed unit label can also describe a different musical representation.
Are six taps six bars?
Six boundaries normally define five complete bar intervals.
Choose equivalent boundaries, select the intended pulse count and beat representation, record several bars, and report boundary count, duration center, and the visible count-plus-unit assumption with converted BPM.
