Three beats, more than one useful gesture
Using a BPM counter in 3/4 requires a pulse label. The notated bar commonly contains three quarter-note beats, but a fast waltz may be felt as one large pulse per bar. Beat-level and bar-level tapping can both be coherent while producing rates that differ by a factor of three.
The counter cannot detect meter. Establish 3/4 from musical context, notation, or qualified listening before using the label.
Quarter-note tapping
Count “one, two, three” and activate on every quarter-note beat. Adjacent intervals represent quarter-note gaps. If they center around 600 milliseconds, the quarter-note rate is 100 BPM. Twelve taps create eleven measured beat intervals and cross several bars.
Keep emphasis differences from changing your gesture. Beat one may feel stronger, but all three activations represent the same metrical level.
Once-per-bar tapping
Activate only on each “one.” A bar at quarter note = 100 lasts 1.8 seconds because three beats each last 0.6 seconds. The observed bar rate is about 33.33 bars per minute. The bar pulse counter multiplies that by an explicit assumption of three beats per bar and displays 100 BPM.
This longer interval can reduce the relative effect of a small press offset, but it creates greater dependence on correct bar boundaries and meter.
Fast music felt in one
A very fast waltz may be conducted or moved in one. Reporting only “60 BPM” can be ambiguous: it might mean 60 bars per minute, while quarter notes move at 180 BPM. State “60 bar pulses/min; assumed 3 quarter beats/bar; converted quarter-note rate 180 BPM.”
Do not force an in-one experience into a quarter-note label without the factor.
Worked comparison
Suppose equivalent downbeats occur at 0, 2,000, 4,010, 6,000, and 7,990 milliseconds. Bar intervals are 2,000, 2,010, 1,990, and 1,990. Their mean is 1,997.5 milliseconds, about 30.04 bars per minute. Multiplying by three gives about 90.11 quarter-note BPM.
A beat-level session near 666 milliseconds should land in the same neighborhood. Disagreement can signal boundary error, source change, or different pulse levels.
Recent windows in triple meter
At beat level, choose a recent interval count divisible by three when you want roughly complete-bar coverage, such as 6 or 9. This is a convenience, not a mathematical requirement. At bar level, the window already contains complete bar gaps.
Do not claim a window detects accent or measure position. It only selects recent intervals.
Pickups and phrase endings
A pickup precedes the first full downbeat. Begin on equivalent full-bar positions rather than tapping pickup and downbeat as though they were equal. At endings with a held note or ritardando, either stop before the change or label that section separately.
The tool cannot recognize anacrusis, fermata, or altered bar length.
Reporting template
Write: meter assumption; pulse event; input method; taps and intervals; center; spread; conversion. Example: “3/4 assumed; downbeat taps; keyboard; 5 boundaries/4 bars; mean bar 1,997.5 ms; 30.04 bars/min ×3 = 90.11 quarter-note BPM; 20-ms range.”
Round to precision supported by the session.
Limits
Triple grouping, accent, and notation are not inferred from tap statistics. A factor-of-three conversion may be arithmetically correct under a wrong assumption. Expressive waltz timing can make beat intervals unequal within a bar even when bar-level rate is coherent.
There is no audio, microphone, automatic meter detection, or performance judgment.
Phrase-level sampling
Measure more than one phrase when the source is expressive. A four-bar sample and the next four bars may have similar converted centers but different within-bar shapes. Keep samples separate, then describe whether bar-level results agree. Do not average contrasting sections until the reporting goal justifies a whole-passage summary.
At beat level, inspect whether beat one receives systematically different press timing because of accent. That pattern affects input without changing the notated three-beat structure.
When comparing triple-meter passages, keep the same level and similar phrase length. A bar-level result and beat-level result need explicit conversion before numerical comparison. Preserve both original units in notes.
When reporting a converted value, write the measured bar rate first, the declared three-beat factor second, and the resulting quarter-note rate last. This order keeps observation separate from interpretation and makes a later unit check straightforward.
